Uchikoshi Celebrates as His New Company Gets a Second Chance at Life

The video game industry is in a precarious position, battling rising costs, waves of layoffs, and internal pushes for AI that have left developers frustrated. Despite the bad news, good things are happening, and teams are fighting to get their visions out to a wider gaming audience.

If there's any dev with a vision, it's Mr. Kotaro Uchikoshi, writer of the Zero Escape trilogy and co-creator of Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy. A few weeks ago, Uchikoshi revealed his own company, named CRASH KEYS, with a strange interactive website that both teased what could be and asked for sponsors and funding.

In an interview with RPG Site, Uchikoshi came out to celebrate the numerous offers the studio has gotten, all with his trademark Uchikoshi flair.

Seeking a Way Out

The announcement of the CRASH KEYS team and website was surreal for longtime fans of Uchikoshi's work. Named after a major organization from the Zero Escape series, the site itself was a blend of tease and genuine request for assistance, enough that many fans were confused about where the announcement ended and the cry for help began.

Despite the fun framing, Uchikoshi came out to say that, sadly, yes, the project teased, likely a fourth entry to the Zero Escape series, has been canceled, but all is not lost! After the website went live, CRASH KEYS was flooded with investment opportunities and work offers, as more continued to pour in.

Uchikoshi's unflappable excitement really has seemed to win the day, allowing his new team to land squarely on their feet while hyping up original series fans and players of his newer work in equal measure. Uchikoshi praised the team at Too Kyo Games, a studio he helped co-found and worked at for years, but made it clear he's eager to get back into his own creative groove.

If there's any dev with a vision, it's Mr. Kotaro Uchikoshi, writer of the Zero Escape trilogy and co-creator of Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy.

From the RPG Site interview, "My colleagues were extraordinary. They were incredibly talented, and they somehow managed to put up with all my ridiculous whims and demands. It was nothing short of a creative paradise." Uchikoshi himself is infamous for being a bit of an auteur, but his willingness to accept support makes him a bit of a diamond in the rough when it comes to big names in gaming.

With his glowing response, Uchikoshi has shown just how open to assistance the team at CRASH KEYS is, discussing the potential for crowdfunding and even opening the door for overseas developers to join the team. He still asks that they know a bit of Japanese and be willing to get paid in "Japan's notoriously low salaries." You can call the man plenty of things, but dishonest isn't one of them.

Keeping the Lights On

It can be so easy to start doom-spiraling over the current tide of the industry, so it's important to step back and acknowledge just how much power players as consumers have to improve the industry step by step. Between CRASH KEYS' second wind and the massive public support for the #SaveMassEffect movement, we're constantly being reminded of what proper public outcry can do.

Gamers could definitely be a bit better about holding the companies that run our industry accountable, but the little victories are just as important, especially when it helps the genuine artists of the craft keep the lights on. As layoffs loom, it's great to see the community rally around those affected, helping them land on their feet despite it all.

Whether the team at CRASH KEYS starts up a wholly original project or finally gives longtime fans the follow-up to Zero Time Dilemma they've been waiting for, any game headed by Uchikoshi-San is sure to have his contagious excitement trapped within.
