It was a sunny November morning, 84 years ago, when a massive Allied fleet made landfall in the Vichy-controlled North Africa. Operation Torch, as it was called, would mark the first major operation by American troops against Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.
To mark the occasion, Company of Heroes 3 is releasing a new story DLC, aptly titled Operation Torch. This will be the second DLC released for the game this year, after the unusually entertaining Last Stand tower defence add-on.
The story campaign is set to be a nice counterpoint to the Afrika Korps-themed tutorial campaign included in the base game.
Company of Heroes 3: Operation Torch Release Date and Details
As announced by Relic Entertainment, the Operation Torch DLC is coming out on November 25. Albeit not accurate to the day (a stunt pulled by the Korea: Il-2 Series developers earlier this year), putting it out in the same month as the real Operation Torch is a cool touch.
The Operation Torch campaign is going to be narrative-driven, focusing on the perspectives of three different American servicemen in missions modelled after real battles that took place that fateful November in 1942.
The full mission list isn't available to the public yet, but we know it will kick off at the landings, depict the hard lessons learned at the Kasserine Pass, and meet a dramatic end in the battle for Hill 609 in Tunisia. One interesting angle the DLC aims to highlight is the special operations that helped turn the tide of the battle for North Africa.
This will be the second DLC released for the game this year, after the unusually entertaining Last Stand tower defence add-on.
The covert ops world of World War 2 has garnered considerable attention, and the African side of things has gained star status through the first season of the SAS: Rogue Heroes TV series, by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, A Christmas Carol, House of Guinness). The third season of the show is expected to come out sometime between the end of this year and early 2027, and it is expected to focus on the liberation of France.
The developers aim to keep things fresh by highlighting different tactical situations and units involved in the operation. The overarching campaign will have two different progression choices per mission, and the ability to earn up to two upgrades depending on your performance on the field. Upgrades earned persist throughout the campaign, so you will be able to make the units feel uniquely yours.
Meet the Company of Heroes 3 Protagonists
All missions in Company of Heroes 3 depict three members from the US Army's 34th Infantry Division, the famous Red Bulls.
At a leadership level, you have Colonel Thomas 'Tom' Becker, the young and inexperienced division commander. Depicted as an emotional leader at heart in spite of the stoic air he tries to project, Becker is prone to putting himself at risk to shield his men.
Comic relief is likely to come from Major George Russo, the 34th Infantry Division's resident intelligence officer and prankster, who has known Becker since his school days. Despite being just as inexperienced as his best friend, Russo puts his skills as Division S-2 to keep Becker on the right track as the unit makes its combat debut.
Finally, on the ground, you see the war through Master Sergeant James 'Jimmy' Flanagan. Sarge Jimmy is a Great War veteran who's seen his share of horrors, and uses his experience to inform and nudge the green officers above him in the right direction.
Company of Heroes 3 is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and XBOX Series X/S. The Operation Torch DLC will be available on November 25.
