Bungie has laid out how it will bring Destiny 2's vaulted campaigns and raids back to the live game, and the studio's own timeline puts the first content returning no earlier than early 2028.
In its first Community Update, published October 29, head of product Josh Deane walked through the unvaulting plan with Dylan 'dmg04' Gafner. The first pass, available to all players, covers campaign, strike and raid content from the vaulted expansions The Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken, plus the Menagerie activity with reprised rewards. "Our first pass for unvaulting, available to all players, focuses on getting our campaign slate whole again," Deane said in the update.
A long road to 2028
The timeline is the catch. Deane said the project is still in pre-production, which he expects to run until January or February 2027, with full production then estimated to take about another 12 months. Bungie's own framing makes early 2028 an estimate rather than a release date, and the update notes the timeline is not final. Work began with feasibility scoping in June, the month Bungie aligned an initial greenlight, and the project was fully greenlit in September 2026.
Alongside the campaigns, the strikes, raids and raid lairs tied to those expansions are set to return, including Eater of Worlds, Spire of Stars and Scourge of the Past, whose final boss is already playable through Pantheon. Bungie is also investigating stretch goals for the unvaulting launch or after: free-roam patrol destinations with Escalation Protocol, seasonal activities, updates to raid and raid-lair weapons, and PvP maps.
What is not coming back
Several requests have no current path. The update rules out an overhauled New Light onboarding experience, new Gambit maps including Kell's Grave, returning seasonal story missions, and seasonal hubs such as the Eliksni Quarter. Deane said some of those exclusions "could come at a cost for what we want to build for you in the future."
The vaulting itself weighs on the announcement. Deane called the 2020 removal of content "a moment that fragmented our experience and broke faith with our community," and framed unvaulting as the starting point for making Destiny 2 whole again.
The same update teases a three-part vision for Destiny beyond the unvaulting, including a Destiny "Legacy" project meant to serve the franchise's full decade-plus experience, and a third piece left redacted, with more details promised around February 2027.
